A machined aluminum dial with a motor where the clicks used to be. It steps 24 crisp clicks a turn in Resolve, bumps at 0 dB in Logic and snaps to every hunk in your diff.

One knob. Six ways to push back.

Pick a feel, then turn the dial. Firmware moves the clicks, sets how hard they land and decides whether the knob springs home.

Feel profile for the dial

Ratchet

Twenty-four crisp clicks per turn, like a good camera dial.

Fluid

No clicks. Weighted and slippery, like a flywheel in oil.

Spring

Pulls back to center. The further you push, the harder it pushes back.

Clock

Twelve heavy detents with a deeper one at noon.

Wall

Hard stops at zero and a hundred, a soft bump halfway.

Magnet

Smooth until it finds something that matters, then it snaps.

Torque against angle: what your finger meets at every point of the turn. Flat is free, teeth are detents, a cliff is a hard stop. The dot is your dial.

What’s inside 44 mm.

Keep scrolling and it comes apart. Six of its eight layers, stacked the way they are assembled, each with the number that matters.

  1. Display

    1.43 ″ round AMOLED

466 × 466 pixels under strengthened glass, set into the knob face. It shows what the knob is holding right now: a frame number, a gain in dB, an angle.

  2. Knob ring

    Ø 58 mm knurled ring

Turned from 6061-T6 aluminum and knurled so a fingertip finds grip without looking. The indicator line is tally red on every finish except Tally.

  3. Motor

    32 mN·m peak torque on USB-C

A brushless gimbal motor under field-oriented control at 10 kHz. There is no mechanical click anywhere inside. Every detent you feel is this motor pushing back, with up to 24 mN·m on battery.

  4. Encoder

    0.022 ° resolution

A 14-bit magnetic encoder reads 16,384 positions per turn, so the firmware knows where a detent should start before your finger reaches it.

  5. Battery

    2,000 mAh about 40 h of haptics

Run it on Bluetooth, or leave it on USB-C for good: a charge limiter keeps the cell healthy. When it does wear out, the cell is sold as a part.

  6. Base

    412 g Ø 72 mm, 44 mm tall

Solid aluminum on a replaceable micro-suction foot. Flick the knob as hard as you like; the base stays where you put it.

All 29 specs on one page

It knows which app you’re in.

Switch windows and the feel switches with you. 64 profiles live on the dial itself, so the right one is loaded before your hand is back on the knob. Try it: pick an app, then turn.

Magnet snaps through diff hunks and problems; Ratchet walks the undo stack. Detent for developers

Now look at it in daylight.

Detent One in Raw, bare bead-blasted aluminum, on a white desk. The display reads Ratchet, 00 of 24.

Machined from one billet.

412 g of 6061-T6 aluminum, cut from solid bar, blasted, anodized and held together by screws you are allowed to undo.

Bead-blasted 6061 aluminum. Cool, bright, a little industrial.

Configure in Raw

Configure in Tally
  1. Cut

A billet of 6061-T6 aluminum is sawn to length. Body and knob both start as solid bar.

  2. Machine

CNC turning and milling cut the body, the knob and its knurl from that one bar.

  3. Bead-blast

Glass beads give every surface the same soft, even matte. Raw finishes leave the line here as bare metal.

  4. Anodize

Type II anodize for Graphite, Glacier, and Tally. The color grows into the aluminum’s surface rather than sitting on top of it.

  5. Engrave

Your words on the base, free. Founders Edition bases carry a serial, 0001–2000.

  6. Assemble

Four Torx screws hold it together, and they are meant to come out. Battery, foot and knob cap are sold as parts.

3-year warranty, parts and labor. The 60-day studio trial comes first.

It keeps working without us.

Detent Studio runs without an account, a cloud or a subscription. Profiles are plain JSON on the dial, the SDK is open and the firmware is Apache-2.0. If Detent Labs disappeared tomorrow, your dial would not notice.

Account
None required. Local-first, no cloud, no telemetry by default.
SDK
Open SDK (TypeScript and Rust); profiles are plain JSON.
Firmware
Open source (Apache-2.0), signed updates over USB or BLE.
Drivers
USB-C: HID + class-compliant MIDI, no driver needed.

The idea stands on the shoulders of Scott Bezek’s open-source SmartKnob. If you like building things, go read it.

What the knob does in each app

What testers noticed first.

Early tester notes from illustrative personas. Detent is a concept product, so these are not customer reviews.

  • I stopped overshooting edits in the first hour. The Ratchet click is exactly one frame and my hand learned it before my head did.

Maren Okafor Colorist and editor on Ratchet
  • Unity gain has a little bump now. I did not know I needed that until I had it, and now every other fader feels broken.

Theo Lindqvist Mix engineer on Wall
  • Magnet mode through a code review is ridiculous. It snaps to each hunk. I review faster and I look at every change.

Priya Raman Staff engineer on Magnet
  • The weight is the first thing you notice. The second is that you keep touching it when you are thinking.

Fair questions.

The rest are in Support & FAQ, including shipping countries, returns and the SDK.

How does the $20 reservation work?

A $20 deposit holds your place and locks the $299 launch price on Detent One. The Founders Edition is always $449; its $50 deposit holds one numbered serial. When your batch is ready we email a ship date and a link to pay the rest; the deposit comes off the price. Cancel any time before it ships for a full refund, one click, no questions.

When does it ship?

Batch 1 ships in February 2027 and Batch 2 in April 2027. Reservations are filled in order, and your confirmation email shows your batch.

Can I pay over time?

Yes, from December 4, when the store goes live. Checkout splits the price into 4 interest-free payments: $87.25 each for Detent One at $349. It is not offered on deposits or on launch-week orders.

What if I do not love it?

Use it for 60 days. If it has not earned its spot on your desk, send it back with the prepaid label for a full refund.

What if my app is not supported?

Every app gets the system set out of the box: scroll, zoom, undo, volume, brightness and media. Beyond that, the open SDK lets anyone publish a profile, and most community profiles take an evening to write.

Do I need an account?

No. Detent Studio runs locally, profiles live on the device, and nothing is sent anywhere unless you opt in to crash reports.
